Bob Mantell spoke to the Treynor Optimist Club about the Financial Literacy program. The focus of the program will be on financial intelligence, which is application of financial literacy.
Bob was hired for the program in September 2009. It is funded by a donation from TS Bank and assistance from the Iowa Bankers Association, the Iowa Department of Education, and the AEA. His current project includes determining how to implement the program.
The program is initiating an in-school banking program. It will be a deposit only program and will begin later this year for K-5th grade. The students will not receive interest on their savings, but will receive small gifts for saving.
Bob has organized a 6th grade mini-class that starts January 26 and runs six weeks. He will also run a three week financial literacy interactive course called EverFi. They will celebrate America Saves Week on February 21-28. Financial Literacy month is April and Iowa has declared Money Smart Week on April 17-24.
